What is Active Release Technique®?
Active Release Technique® (ART®) is a hands-on method for diagnosing and treating soft-tissue injuries including muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. In the body these tissues function independently and are designed to slide overtop of one another with minimal resistance. When soft tissues become overused, adhesions and scar tissue can develop, leading to the soft tissues being shortened and altered, as well as entrapping the nerves and compromising the blood supply. ART® treatment restores proper function and movement to injured area, enhancing strength, speed, and endurance, allowing the body to function efficiently.

How Does ART® Work?
Soft tissues in the body are constantly undergoing cumulative trauma. This can be the result of a new sprain/strain, an old repetitive injury, or even constant tension from sitting at a desk. ART® is designed to stretch, separate and release these areas of cumulative trauma. By using specific hand pressure and tension and gentle stretching along the direction of tissue fibers, ART® breaks up the fibrous adhesions. Benefits of this technique include restored blood flow, soft tissue healing, lengthening of tight and damaged muscles, release of entrapped nerves, and improved range of motion and flexibility.

ART® & Athletics
ART® is used by athletes worldwide to treat injuries and enhance performance. It's been a major presence in Ironman races for over 20 years, with volunteers helping triathletes swim, bike, and run towards the finish line. ART® can also treat many common muscle overuse injuries that develop from daily stress, making it appropriate not just for elite athletes, but for everyone.
